Marine Metal Coatings: Exposure Comes First

Compare marine coating requirements for coastal steel, enclosures and immersed components before selecting powder chemistry.

Compare marine coating requirements for coastal steel, enclosures and immersed components before selecting powder chemistry. Use the following questions to prepare a project-specific finishing brief.

Distinguish atmosphere, splash and immersion

Coastal atmosphere, intermittent splash and continuous immersion are different coating duties. Identify substrate, salt exposure, UV, cleaning chemicals and inspection access. A powder system suitable for a shore-side cabinet is not automatically a vessel lining or submerged fitting system.

Record whether metal is steel, galvanized steel or aluminum, and whether dissimilar metals meet at fasteners. Crevices, trapped water and damaged edges can undermine protection even when broad flat surfaces look sound.

Evaluate the complete protection system

Compare preparation, primer and topcoat together. Epoxy can contribute barrier protection but exterior UV suitability must be reviewed. Weatherable polyester, polyurethane or fluoropolymer products must still be checked for their actual environment and application requirements.

Powder coating does not inherently outperform every liquid paint. Geometry, heat tolerance, repair access and owner specifications may favour another approach. For restoration, agree whether the old finish is removed, tested for compatibility or retained.

Specify verification and maintainability

Agree preparation checks, thickness locations, cure and adhesion evidence and any required corrosion testing. Laboratory test hours should not be presented as a direct prediction of years at sea.

Drawings should identify grounding points, threads, drainage holes and field-weld allowances. Protect coated parts during transport and agree a compatible repair procedure. PPC reviews suitable removable components at its Toronto facility; send the service classification and coating specification before arranging freight.
