AAMA 2604 vs 2605: Selecting an Aluminum Finish

Choose architectural aluminum coating requirements using the applicable AAMA edition, exposure and product-specific evidence.

By Professional Powder Coating Ltd.Published

Choose architectural aluminum coating requirements using the applicable AAMA edition, exposure and product-specific evidence. Use the following questions to prepare a project-specific finishing brief.

Use the specified edition

AAMA 2604 and 2605 are performance specifications for organic coatings on architectural aluminum. FGIA describes 2604 as high performance and 2605 as superior performance. State the edition required by the project; do not combine acceptance values from different revisions.

The specification addresses more than colour. Weathering, adhesion, corrosion and other requirements must be considered as a package. The resin name alone does not establish that a finished component meets the required class.

Match the project exposure

Identify sun exposure, coastal conditions, cleaning practices and visible surfaces. Review powder-product evidence and the proposed pretreatment with the project team. A higher class does not replace proper fabrication, drainage or care during installation.

Compare gloss and colour retention requirements against a physical standard. Panels and extrusions may have different handling constraints. Welding, cutting and drilling after finishing should be discussed before the production sequence is fixed.

Define the procurement evidence

Ask which product, pretreatment, application controls and test documentation support the proposed finish. Product qualification, applicator approval and project warranty are distinct questions; do not substitute one for another.

Send substrate, drawings, specified class and edition, appearance sample, quantity and delivery sequence to PPC. Define masking and accepted rack marks, packing and receiving inspection. The current FGIA documents govern acceptance; this guide does not reproduce their test limits or imply blanket project certification.
