Review iron and zinc phosphate pretreatment by substrate, corrosion duty and process control rather than colour alone. Use the following questions to prepare a project-specific finishing brief.
Pretreatment is a system decision
Cleaning removes contamination; conversion treatment changes the surface for the subsequent coating system. Neither substitutes for removing unstable corrosion or an unsuitable old finish. Identify steel, zinc-coated metal and aluminum separately.
The Powder Coating Institute describes iron phosphate as widely used and zinc phosphate as an option for demanding performance. That is not a blanket ranking for every part. Substrate compatibility, exposure, powder selection and the complete treatment line matter.
Compare controls and evidence
Ask how cleaning, bath condition, rinsing, drying and treatment quality are controlled. Do not copy concentration, temperature or coating-weight targets from another product; follow the selected chemical supplier's process instructions.
Review the actual corrosion requirement and representative test evidence for the complete substrate-pretreatment-powder system. Salt contamination, poor rinsing or trapped water can undermine an otherwise appropriate choice.
Provide a useful manufacturing brief
Include material grades, mixed-metal features, existing scale or contamination, corrosion duty and production volume. Explain whether parts include cavities, drain paths or surfaces that cannot be wetted or heated.
PPC reviews preparation together with coating and handling. Request the accepted process scope and inspection requirements before releasing a recurring program. Keep the approved pretreatment and powder combination under change control so a substitute is assessed rather than assumed equivalent.
