Specify fusion-bond epoxy for pipe and fittings: exposure, surface preparation, cure, end masking and continuity inspection. Use the following questions to prepare a project-specific finishing brief.
Separate the coating duties
A pipe spool, a buried fitting and a support bracket do not necessarily need the same coating. State whether protection is internal, external or both; identify fluid contact, operating temperature, installation conditions and any owner-approved product. Fusion-bond epoxy is a functional powder system, not a universal replacement for every liquid lining or pipeline protection system.
For outdoor exposure, review weathering separately from corrosion resistance. Pure epoxy powders can chalk under UV. A specified topcoat may be needed; the manufacturer must confirm compatibility. Potable-water contact, immersion and pressure-system requirements need their own approval.
Prepare and qualify the actual geometry
Send bore, overall envelope, wall thickness, substrate and lifting details. Identify threads, sealing faces, weld ends and other no-coat areas. Cleanliness and blast profile must follow the selected product and governing specification, rather than an assumed shop-wide value.
Heavy fittings heat differently from light coupons. Agree how part temperature, application and cure will be controlled for the real geometry. Confirm which interior surfaces can be reached and inspected before accepting an internal-coating scope.
Agree acceptance before production
Specify thickness limits and measurement locations, required adhesion or cure checks, and the continuity-test procedure where applicable. Holiday testing needs approved settings, acceptance limits and a repair procedure. A statement that a coating is epoxy does not establish holiday-free coverage.
Include piece identification, inspection records, end protection, stacking contacts and handling after testing. For PPC review, send the specification with drawings and quantities; use the Napanee application study as project context, not proof that every pipe service is qualified.
